Round 2 of ONA Division 1 delivered another strong afternoon of netball, with emerging young talent, established combinations and reigning premiers all making statements as the season begins to take shape.
Hawks Royal Hotel v LIFE Studio
The match of the round showcased the exciting depth of young talent coming through the competition, with Hawks Royal Hotel taking on LIFE Studio, who entered the clash fresh from a Round 1 win over Kinross 1sts.
The young Hawks line-up produced a composed and courageous performance against a more experienced LIFE outfit packed with proven senior performers who have transitioned seamlessly from the junior ranks.
At the 10-minute mark of the opening quarter, scores were locked at 10-all before LIFE’s height and defensive urgency in and around the circle began to create pressure on the smaller Hawks attack and shooting combinations. Forced increasingly into the backspace, Hawks found scoring difficult at times, although the accurate shooting of Rylie Simmons kept them firmly in touch. LIFE held a narrow 13-11 lead at quarter time.
The second quarter began evenly, but LIFE’s rebounding strength proved critical as they gradually established control. Some rushed attacking play from Hawks allowed LIFE to skip out to a seven-goal advantage, with shooters Lucy Wilson, Mikayla Wishart and Millie Hollingsworth punishing turnovers through quick release and accurate finishing. To their credit, Hawks responded with confidence late in the quarter to reduce the margin to six goals at halftime.
LIFE took command in the third quarter, stretching the lead to 40-30 at the final break. Hawks again started the quarter positively but struggled to sustain momentum against the relentless defensive pressure applied by LIFE’s formidable circle defenders.
For the second week in succession, Hawks saved some of their best netball for the final term, fighting back strongly to reduce the deficit to seven goals before LIFE closed out a quality contest 54-47.
A brave performance from Hawks and another impressive showing from LIFE in what shapes as a fascinating Division 1 season ahead.
OHS Hornets v Vipers
The young OHS Hornets faced a daunting assignment against the reigning premiers Vipers, who came into the round after claiming a Grand Final rematch victory over City in Round 1.
Vipers wasted no time asserting themselves, exploding to a 20-5 lead at quarter time through their trademark speed and attacking precision. Their strength right across the court proved difficult for the inexperienced Hornets to contain, with WA Georgia Davis delivering a masterclass in attacking play through sharp goal assists and fluid court movement. Vipers consistently used strong body positioning and front cuts to great effect.
An intriguing battle developed through the middle court, with young Hornets centre Alice Harvey matching up against Sophie Fardell around the circle edge. Harvey also produced several impressive tips and spoils that helped spark a stronger second-quarter effort from the students. Shooter Emily Charnock continued to settle into the senior ranks well, holding strongly in the backspace under pressure.
Despite the improved passages from Hornets, Vipers held a commanding 39-14 halftime advantage.
Defender Kate Mastronardi was outstanding for Vipers, reading the play superbly and creating repeated intercept opportunities as the premiers extended the margin to 60-17 by three-quarter time.
To their credit, the Hornets never stopped competing. They matched Vipers through the opening five minutes of the final quarter before the premiers’ experience and firepower again took control. Vipers eventually ran out convincing 77-22 winners.
While the scoreboard was one-sided, the determination and resilience shown by the rebuilding Hornets side — following the departure of several experienced Year 12 players — was impossible to question.
Hawks DVM Embroidery v OCNC Craig Harvey Mechanical
OCNC Craig Harvey Mechanical welcomed back key players Caitlin Henning in the shooting circle and Talia Opetaia in defence, and the impact was immediate as City quickly clicked into gear.
Their polished combinations and experience saw them establish early control with a dominant 17-5 opening quarter lead.
Hawks DVM Embroidery faced a difficult challenge against one of the competition heavyweights but continued to compete with courage and determination throughout the contest. City maintained control across the four quarters to eventually record a 62-13 victory.
Round 3 now presents an intriguing all-Hawks showdown between Hawks Royal Hotel and Hawks DVM Embroidery — a clash that will decide early club bragging rights and promises to be one to watch in Round 3.
