2025 Grand Finals Wrap ~ Celebration of Junior Netball ~ by Pam Ryan

    Celebrating Our Youngest Netballers

While Grand Final day brings an exciting conclusion to the season, it’s also a powerful reminder of the incredible depth and future talent within our netball community. Taking some time to wander the courts and watch some of our youngest players was truly inspiring. The high standard of play is a testament to the hard work of dedicated coaches and the unwavering support from their clubs–the ones I watched were Orange Public School (OPS), Hawks, Life Studio, and Kinross. These and our other clubs have a fantastic tradition of nurturing young talent, and their efforts are a great example of the hard work happening across our entire Association.

    A Showcase of Junior Talent

The junior netballers on display had seriously impressive skills, with players driving to the ball with purpose, showing strong rebounding, and even turning in the air to redirect play. The 11scontest between OPS Neo Sapphires and Hawks Blatch's was an enthralling, back-and-forth game that finished 19-16 to OPS, with both teams showing a remarkable combination of skill and pure exuberance.

The 12s game between Life Studio Gems and Hawks AC Fuel was just as captivating. The air hummed with energy, not just from the players, but from two enthusiastic cheer squads on the sidelines. It was a tight tussle, filled with spoiling defence and beautiful long-range shots that showed confidence and a willingness to back themselves. Life took it out 33-26. The 13s divisions were equally compelling.

The 13s A Grand Final was a unique club-on-club showdown between Hawks Tony Leahey Ford and Hawks Tenpin Bowl. The game was tight in the first half before the Tony Leahey Ford side asserted their dominance in the second, pulling away62-3. Despite being from the same club, no quarter was given on the court or on the sideline, showing the competitive spirit that exists at every level.

Similarly, the 13s B game was a hard-fought contest where Kinross 13s B defeated Hawks Leahey Auto Group 30-21. I was taken not only by the heart and enthusiasm from both sides, but also by their respect for the umpires’ call. Well done, girls.

    Behind the Scenes Dedication

The commitment on display wasn't just on the court; it was reflected in the dedication of coaches and club volunteers. The story of Cara Denman, coach of Kinross 13sB, is a fantastic example of the passion that fuels our sport. Cara drove from Sydney late Friday night, arriving home at 2 am, to be on the sideline for her charges' 8:15 am game. She then drove straight back to Sydney for her competing commitment! This level of dedication from coaches is what makes our Association so strong and is indicative of the selfless effort from countless individuals who help our youngest players achieve their potential.

All these games are a wonderful reflection of the spirit of netball: a vibrant, positive environment here players, young and old, are encouraged to be their best. It's a joy to see so much talent, and even more so to know these kids have many more years to enjoy the game they clearly love.
